Costa Rica's Central Valley is a plateau commonly referred as extending from the city of San Ramón in Alajuela to the west, to the city of Paraíso in Cartago to the east.

It basically includes the provinces of San Jose (capital of the country), Cartago, Alajuela and Heredia.

The land in the valley is relatively plain, despite of being surrounded by several mountains of volcanoes, such as the Irazu, Turrialba, Barva and Poas.

The latter part of the Central Range, and the region houses almost three quartes of Costa Ricans. It occupies an area of 11.366 km² (more than a fifth of the whole country).

The valley is divided in two sections: The Western section or "Central Valley" and the easter section or "Valle del Guarco". The Western Valley is influenced by the weather patterns of Costa Rica's pacific coast and the eastern valley is influenced by the caribbean coast weather.

The temperature in the Central Valley oscillates between 15°C and 30°C, it is usually a good temperature to travel around the city and its surroundings.

The valley is the center of commerce, industry and service activities. It is a very diverse area, where you can have a good city experience and within less than an hour explore nature on its whole.
